| Question 2, which the voters approved November 5, 2002 changed the Transitional Bilingual Education law. It requires school districts to place limited English speakers into “sheltered English immersion” (SEI) classes in which nearly all classroom instruction is in English but with the curriculum and presentation designed for children who are learning the English language. Books and instructional materials are in English and all reading, writing, and subject matter are taught in English by specially trained teachers. Students receive content instruction while also developing their listening, speaking, reading, and writing English language skills. Full time self-contained sheltered English immersion classes (SEI) are available at the following schools: Beebe School – grades 1 & 2 Linden School – grades 3, 4, 5 Salemwood School – grades 6, 7, 8 Malden High School – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 Parents not desiring the self-contained sheltered English immersion (SEI) program have the right to apply for a waiver or to decline to enroll their child(ren) in the program. Students whose parents opt out of the self-contained SEI classes will receive English as a Second Language (ESL) pull-out instruction with specially trained teachers.
