The study of English involves reading classic and contemporary literature, writing for a variety of audiences and purposes, discussing ideas, building vocabulary, and developing speaking, listening and viewing skills. The Malden High School English Department offers a standards-based curriculum featuring the best of traditional literature along with contemporary fiction and nonfiction reflecting the diversity of writers from around the world. The curriculum is aligned with the Massachusetts English Language Arts Framework and includes intensive MCAS preparation in the ninth and tenth grades. Although there are core readings for each grade, the English Department offers levels of instruction in each of the four years required for graduation: honors (H), college preparatory (CP), and in the junior and senior years, advanced placement(AP). The selection of appropriate English courses and the passing of each course are critical to the successful completion of an academic program. Guidance counselors and English teachers will help students make an appropriate choice of sequential courses. English teachers in grades 7 and 8 also follow a standards-based curriculum integrating literature, writing, and language arts.
