The guidance department provides a service to students, parents, faculty, administration and the community. Our goal is to help each student understand himself/herself better and to apply that understanding to fully maximize educational experiences. Guidance services are provided by counselors with specialized training; however, parents, teachers and all school personnel and other community agencies are an important and essential part of the process. The guidance staff provides essential and needed services in the following areas:

(1) Orientation -assist students in making a smooth transition from school to school and from grade 7 to 8 and grade 8 to 9. Orientation is provided to all students transferring from other schools as well.

(2) Individual and group counseling --- personal, school or home related

(3) Educational -- college admission, financial aid ,career counseling and job placement

(4) Consultation -- help others who have primary responsibilities for students such as parents, teachers, administrators

(5) Appraisal---- help students to examine their potential through the use of academic records and standardized tests

(6) Referral to other agencies and resources for services not available within the school

Background:
Guidance services are an integral part of the school activity that is continually assessing how well the school is meeting students’ educational, social, and emotional needs.

Guidance services also assist those within the school community including parents, administration, faculty and other community residents to understand how their own roles and leadership can better serve and meet the needs of all students.

In working with students the counselors evaluate and provide specific services in terms of intellectual, social, developmental, parental attitudes, aspirations, family relationships, and most importantly the students themselves, their personalities, needs and concerns.

Since all students in the high school grades 9-12 are assigned to a house, one guidance counselor is responsible for providing services to all students in that house. Students remain with the same counselor during their high school years. This structure provides continuity and strength in the delivery of services as students develop, mature and progress over the four years.

Guidance counselors are assigned as follows for the 2004-05 school year:

A House: Victoria Trembly 781-397-7284

B House: Erin Craven 781-397-7234

C House: Ann Martinson 781-397-7351

D House Susan Lessard 781-388-0641

Middle Schools Grades 5-8

In addition to the guidance activities described above, school counselors provide specialized services unique to middle school aged students. These services include; student orientation from grade to grade; assist in the registration of new students; serving as chairpersons for the Student Support Teams; organize and hold small group counseling sessions around a variety of personal and school related issues such as bullying, anger management, elf-esteem, conflict resolution, friendships and relationships, health, hygiene; hold parent/student conferences, serve as a facilitator and advocator involving sexual harassment cases, work closely with teachers and other staff members to resolve classroom issues; crisis intervention as needed; serve as a liaison with all outside agencies such as DSS, courts, probation officer, welfare offices, mental health agencies and others as needed
