Dedicated To Providing All Malden Students With The Best Possible Science And Health Experiences!!!

Director’s Message-

This Malden Public Schools Science and Health web page will always be a 'work in progress". As this school year progresses more and more information pertaining to the school district’s Science and Health Department will gradually appear. It is hoped that soon our K-8 and High School Science Curricula and High School Science and Health Course of Studies will appear, as well as all other pertinent information that the general public might wish to access.

Please stop back often and watch as this web page develops!

As the school district’s Director of Science and Health, I welcome your interest in our department. Should you wish to contact me, you may do so by telephone at either my Beebe School office [(781) 388-0635] or my High School office [(781) 397-1531] or by email at rsartwell@malden.mec.edu.

Sincerely,

Robert T. Sartwell

Science and Health Department Initiatives

The Malden Science and Health Departments are currently involved in a number of initiatives that are helping to improve Science instruction throughout the district.

Tufts – GK12:
This collaboration between the Tufts Engineering Department brings Engineering/Technology graduate students into the district’s Science classrooms in an attempt to bring current and appropriate technology/engineering design principles into our students’ daily classroom work. At this time, many graduate students are working with over 30 teachers to infuse state-of-the-art technology into every K – 12 school in our district.

TRITEC:
This collaboration with TRITEC is helping teachers throughout the district to create and implement Project Based Units (PBU) into their classes. The Science/Health component of this imitative is currently in the process of creating new PBU’s to accompany The Saugus Ironworks Great Adventure, Grow Caterpillar Grow, and other Science and Technology units already being used in many Science classrooms to create equity and motivate students to learn Science content and skills. Implementation of these PBU's have already been shown to improve the Grade 5 Science MCAS scores throughout our school district.

FULCRUM:
This collaboration with the Tufts Education Department and Physics Departments is attempting to build a cadre of Teacher Leaders in the Physical Sciences throughout all the schools in our school district. Funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, this imitative is in the beginning stages of training of the first group of teachers in all aspects of the Physical Science content and appropriate teacher pedagogy so that their students will have a comprehensive grounding in this often misunderstood and confusing domain of science. It is hoped that a second cohort of Malden Science teachers will join the this program in the very near future.

Greater North Shore Science Partnership:
This collaboration between UMass, Boston and Northeastern University permits staff from our department access to professional development in the latest Science & Health teaching pedagogy and content knowledge and skills at no/greatly reduced cost. This content is directly connected with the daily lessons of students who are fortunate to have our teachers that have benefited from this training.

Health and Wellness Program:
The Health and Wellness teachers are currently implementing a Health and Wellness Program that are being supported by the Massachusetts Department of Education. It is hoped that this program (Peacebuilders) can be seamlessly integrated into the already existing program and that they will increase our students’ awareness of the extremely important aspects of social competency and emotional and physical health. At Malden High School, we continue to examine social and health related issues and strive to adequately prepare our students for the challenges that they may face in their daily lives.

Science Department News

K – 8 Science Curriculum Alignment
The K – 8 Science Department Curriculum has recently been realigned to the 2001 Revision of the Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Curriculum Frameworks. This alignment will insure that every Malden K – 8 Science student, no matter which school that student attends, will receive a comprehensive overview of all Science content and skills. This preparation in all domains of Science and Technology/Engineering will provide a foundation for future learning, provide content knowledge and skills for their everyday lives, and will cover all of the subject matter necessary to be successful on both the Grade 5 and 8 MCAS in Science and Technology/Engineering. Additionally, all of the Science offerings at Malden High School have been adjusted to meet the requirements of the recently approved (2006) changes in the High School Science Standards and will adequately cover all skills and knowledge that our students need to perform well and demonstrate their Science competency on the Science MCAS which has recently become manditory for graduation from High School in Massachusetts.

Addition of AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and AP Physics at Malden High School
Advanced Placement Biology has returned to Malden High School! After an absence of a few years, Advanced Placement Biology has been reinstated at Malden High School and Advanced Placement Physics and Advanced Placement Chemistry have been added. Advanced Placement courses provide High School students the opportunity to obtain college credit for taking courses in High School and scoring sufficiently well on Advanced Placement Exams. As of now, teachers have been trained and over 40 students are enrolled in these rigorous Science offerings. It is hoped that in the very near future that other Advanced Placement Science offerings (such as AP Environmental Science) will be offered to our students.

Continued Departmental Emphasis on Laboratory Activities
The Science and Health Department continues to place increased emphasis on hands-on Science activities, projects, and experiments in all of our Science classes. These opportunity has allowed us to provide our students with increased opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills in ways that makes these concepts more meaningful and applicable to their daily and future lives. Additionally, the K – 8 Curriculum alignment, the purchase of a new modular Science textbook in Grades 3, 4 & 5, and the redistribution of textbooks, supplies, and equipment has made a significant impact on the scope and breadth of Science content, skills, activities, and projects to which our Science students are exposed.

Continued Departmental Emphasis on Reading Comprehension, Writing, and Notetaking
The Science and Health Department continues to place a great emphasis on the importance of good notetaking and writing in our courses. All Science and Health staff in Grades 6 - 12 require their students to keep a detailed notebook that includes factual Science or Health content information, vocabulary, and skills as well as the student's own reflection on that content's importance, application, and meaning in their own words. Additionally, more non-fiction reading is taking place in our classrooms than ever before. Notes and reflections from the raadings will also be contained within the students' notebooks.
