| Social studies educators teach students the content knowledge, intellectual skills, and civic values necessary for fulfilling the duties of citizenship in a participatory democracy. NCSS defines social studies as "the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence." Within the school program, social studies provides coordinated, systematic study drawing upon such disciplines as anthropology, archaeology, economics, geography, history, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, and sociology, as well as appropriate content from the humanities, mathematics, and natural sciences. In essence, social studies promotes knowledge of and involvement in civic affairs. And because civic issues--such as health care, crime, and foreign policy--are multidisciplinary in nature, understanding these issues and developing resolutions to them require multidisciplinary education. These characteristics are the key defining aspects of social studies. Each grade level through Grade 12 addresses the strands and standards of History and Geography, Economics, Civics and Government with the following overarching themes as designated in the Massachusetts Frameworks: PreK-K: Living and Working Together Grade 1 - True Stories and Folk Tales from America and Around the World Grade 2 - E Pluribus Unum - From Many, One Grade 3 - Massachusetts and its Cities and Towns: Geography and History Grade 4 - North American Geography Grade 5 - United States History, Geography, Economics, And Government: Early Exploration To Westward Movement Grade 6 - World Geography Grade 7 - Ancient & Classical Civilizations Grade 8 - World History I Grade 9 - United States History I Grade 10- United States History II, Advanced Placement United States History Grade 11- Modern World History, Advanced Placement World History Grade 12 - Electives: Justice and Government, Sociology, Psychology, Global Issues, Advanced Placment United States History, Advanced Placement World History MALDEN HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT MEMBERS: Carol Mastromauro, Teacher Leader - Modern World History; Advanced Placement World History Dana Marie Brown - United States History I; Psychology Hayley Fauver - Modern World History; Sociology Jamie Green - United States History I; United States History II; Advanced Placement World History Marsha Healy - United States History II; Modern World History Greg Hurley - United States History I; Modern World History Rebecca Johnson - United States History II; Advanced Placement World History Kevin Kilbride - Modern World History; Advanced Placement United States History Michael Lightbody - United States History II Coryne Legare - United States History I Ben Max - United States History I; United States History II; Advanced Placement United States History Ann Pember - United States History I; Global Issues; Psychology Rick Tivnan - United States History II; Justice & Government

| SPECIAL PROGRAMS AND PARTNERSHIPS: Tufts Internship Program - Faculty of the History and Social Studies Department partner with Tufts University to serve as mentor/cooperating teachers for Tufts graduate students in History and Social Studies. In exchange, Tufts University offers professional development opportunities for Malden Teachers. VOICES ARE RISING WITH NEW TEACHING AMERICAN HISTORY GRANT The Voices Rising Project is a three-year initiative, funded through the U.S. Department of Education through its Teaching American History grant program that will train teachers in grades 3, 5, 8, and high school to think and act like historians by using and analyzing primary source documents in their teaching of history. The school districts of Malden, Everett, Medford, and Revere will work in collaboration with the Tri-City Technology Education Collaborative (TRITEC). Partnering with the schools in this project are Suffolk University, University of Massachusetts at Lowell through the Tsongas Industrial History Center, the Boston National Historical Park, the Boston Public Library, Old North Church, Minuteman National Historical Park, Lowell National Historical Park, Saugus Iron Works Historical Site and the Boston African American National Historical Site. The university partners, Suffolk University, and UMass Lowell will share the responsibility of providing summer institutes and seminars to the teachers, while the six Boston-area national parks and historic sites will offer a hands-on component to the classroom professional development. The Boston Public Library will provide research services to the participating teachers. In the first year of the project, Malden High School history teachers developed a PBU on The Road to Revolution, which has been implemented into the ninth grade curriculum. LAPTOPS IN AMERICAN HISTORY The Laptops in the American History Classroom project addresses the technology professional development needs of high school American history teachers in Malden, Everett, and Medford, as demonstrated on the state's Technology Self-Assessment Test (TSAT). This project provides an opportunity for technology (laptops) to support the enhancement of American history content by providing in-depth technology-related workshops to teachers charged with effectively implementing technology into the classroom to increase student achievement, and maintaining and supporting classroom technology use. The History and Social Studies department is currently in the second year of this project. Michele Magner and Judi Allen co-facilate the workshops.
