Kindergarten classes are available to any child who will be 5 years of age by August 31. Under Malden’s "Controlled Choice" Student Assignment Plan, parents may select from any of the district’s five schools. All schools offer full-day kindergarten classes (8:15 am to 2:15 pm with the exception of Salemwood and Ferryway which are 7:45 am to 3:25 pm). All assignments will be subject to space availability and racial fairness guidelines.

In order to register a child for kindergarten, parents/guardians need to complete the enclosed Registration Application. The application includes a Home Language form, a Mass Health form, a Medical Release of Records form, with a copy of the child’s most current immunization record, child’s birth certificate and proof of Malden residency (current Gas or Electric Bill which indicates the parent/guardian’s name and address). No child will be able to attend school without providing all required medical documentation. Only upon completion of this process, will a child be fully registered and allowed to begin school in August. Missing required documents/forms will delay your child’s registration. Children currently attending the Malden Public Schools pre-kindergarten program or special education pre-kindergarten programs must submit a completed Registration Application to the Parent Information Center to properly enroll. Parents with children with special needs should contact the Special Needs Office at 781-397-7245 if they have any questions.

Kindergarten registration applications usually become available during the last week of February/first week of March for students planning to enroll in kindergarten for the following September. All applications received at the Parent Information Center during the months of March through June will be processed in four monthly batches. For example, all applications received by the last day of March will be processed first in one batch using the “Controlled Choice” Student Assignment plan placement criteria. (Parents who already have children attending the Malden Public Schools are strongly encouraged to register their kindergarten child during the first batch in March if they desire to keep their children together at the same school). Applications received by the last day of April will then be processed in a second batch, and so forth. During the months of July and August, kindergarten registration will take place at the Parent Information Center by appointment only, and students will obtain an immediate school assignment.
